History of the St. Albert Senior Citizens' Club

The beginnings of the St. Albert Senior Citizens' Club go back as far as 1973, in response to a need for a permanent location with easy access and storage space for senior socializing. A recommendation to the Alberta-RCMP Century Project Committee in 1974 by the Women's Institute of St. Albert, to provide a recreation centre for seniors of the area was submitted and approved.

A building, originally the Teen Centre and in dire need of repairs and maintenance, was moved and renovated in part, with the $20,000.00 grant they received. The rest was supplied by various service clubs and organizations around town, who offered financial assistance, manpower or both. The Town of St. Albert provided the facility at a nominal fee.

In August 1975, the St. Albert Senior Citizens' Club was incorporated and today, provides seniors with a place to socialize and stay active by participating in the recreational programs and other activities offered or by volunteering. The finances and day-to-day operations of the Club are controlled by an elected board. Member-run committees develop and organize projects and activities for the Club.

Volunteer Opportunities

  • Registered Nurse - for the Blood Pressure Clinic.

  • Kitchen Assistant - we are looking for an individual to assist our cook in preparing food and clean-up Monday 10:00 am - 2:00 pm and Tuesday noon - 2:00 pm

  • Valuable Transporter - we require volunteer bus drivers with a Class 4 license to drive senior citizens in St. Albert to and from the Club for programs and services for a half day once a week.

  • Phoning Committee - don't have a lot of time? How about calling fellow Club members, every few months to bring them up to date on upcoming events and activities. Do the calling from the comfort of your home, on your own schedule. If interested, let Kristie know.

  • Bingo volunteers - income to operate the programs at our Club rely on the funding from working at BINGOS. This activity takes place twice a month at the Campbell Park Bingo Hall from 11 am - 4 pm. A great way to get your 'walking' exercise! A non-smoking area is available to work.

  • Pot Luck Suppers - we are looking for individuals that enjoy being part of a team. Help prepare tables for Pot Luck Suppers, assist in the kitchen with dishes and clean up of auditorium. This is a once a month commitment and a lot of fun.

  • Fundraising Committee - Individuals to be part of a team, providing creativity for fundraising ideas, events and Grant Research to raise money for the St. Albert Senior Citizens' Club.

We would love to hear from you. If you have any ideas or suggestions for new activities, share them with us today.

            New Horizons Grant

The St. Albert Senior Citizens’ Club is the proud recipient of a $25,000 New Horizons Grant for 2008.
This grant will enable us to facilitate resources and
programming that promote seniors involvement in
the community.

The St. Albert Senior Citizens’ Club will coordinate a
Seniors Link Project that includes three main
components:

1. Intergenerational Buddy System – to enhance relationships with seniors and youth.

2. Help Link Seniors with services and resources they require – improve the lives of seniors by connecting them with the information services and support they need to live happier, healthier and more fulfilling lives.

3. Identifying Community partners to help identify seniors at risk in the community and increase awareness in the community of seniors at risk and how to report incidents.

An advisory board will be established utilizing community partners. The current members of the New Horizons Seniors Advisory Committee will be asked to continue, along with representatives from other stakeholder agencies in the community.
